Italy is the land of "la dolce vita"--the sweet life--where wine, food, and good company are entwined in the culture. Blessed with diverse climate and terroir, Italy produces the most varietals of any country. The finest, most esteemed, and celebrated wines are made from sangiovese and nebbiolo.

We've selected four extraordinary red wines for a tour of Italy's premier wine regions: a 96 point Brunello from famed Montalcino in Tuscany (sangiovese), a 92-point Super Tuscan from Chianti (sangiovese/cabernet sauvignon), a 92-point nebbiolo from Langhe, Piedmont, and a 93-point barbaresco from the prized Gavi area in Piedmont (nebbiolo).

2011 Tenuta di Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino

2011 Tenuta di Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino

96 Points!Decanter - "Wonderful youthful freshness and drive here. Cool, crunchy berry fruit, fresh thyme, and spice and leather aromas, and what a big impression on the palate. It is clean and classy with a touch of astringency, very fine tannins, and a long, complex finish."
92 Points!Wine Enthusiast - "Underbrush, red berry, scorched earth and dark spice aromas emerge in the glass. The structured, chewy palate offers mature black cherry, clove, ground pepper and star anise set in a firm framework of fine-grained tannins. Drink 2018–2028."
91 Points!James Suckling

(Usual retail: $65)

Tenute Silvio Nardi consists of 80 hectares of vineyards in an unspoiled part of central Tuscany: Montalcino, whose symbol is its great red wine, Brunello. Silvio Nardi founded the estate here at Casale del Bosco;. The estate's vineyards are situated between 140 and 420 meters above sea level: some extend north-west of Montalcino on the hills around Casale del Bosco, while others are located to the north of it at Tenuta di Bibbiano and to the south-east at Manachiara, where the precious cru of the same name originates.

13 Roberto Voerzio

2013 Roberto Voerzio "Disanfrancesco" Langhe Nebbiolo

92 Points!Antonio Galloni - "The 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo Disanfrancesco is a terrific wine that imparts enormous pleasure and excitement with each sip. This is a medium-bodied expression of Nebbiolo that opens to a bright and buoyant bouquet. There are notes of wild berry, licorice and grilled herb. The smoothness and general silkiness of the mouthfeel are what make this wine so excellent to pair with lunches or light dinners."
91 Points!Robert Parker - "Voerzio's 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is another terrific example of the year. Striking aromatics give the 2013 much of its lifted personality. Sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, mint, citrus and white pepper are all beautifully sculpted throughout. This is an especially delicate wine that impresses with its poise and freshness."

(Usual retail: $45)

Low-yield, concentrated-flavor grapes are fermented with natural yeasts. Family winery has been making wine since 1350 in Langhe, Piedmont, Italy.

2013 Cabreo Il Borgo Super Tuscan

2013 Cabreo "Il Borgo" Super Tuscan (Sangiovese/Cab Sauv)

93 Points!James Suckling - "A balanced and fruity red with reserve and finesse. Medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2018 but already delicious. A beautiful blend of sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon."
92 Points!Wilfred Wong -  "Long and sleek, the sophisticated 2013 Cabreo Borgo is a red wine that nicely combines the Tuscan traditions—sweet earthiness, dried leather, and crisp acidity—with new world nuances—ripe fruit, layered palate textures and smoothness in the finish. Drinks nicely now.

(Usual retail: $49)

Just above Greve in the Chianti region, the Cabreo holdings include 124 acres planted to Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grown to produce Il Borgo. Chianti’s famed stony soils are ideal for making wines with great aging potential. At 984 feet in elevation, the densely planted vineyards produce low yields of grapes with concentration and complexity. Fermentation at controlled temperature with extended maceration enhances the wine’s rich body, color and texture. After malolactic fermentation, the wines are blended and matured in oak barrels and spend at least six months in bottle before release.

2012 Michele Chiarlo

2012 Michele Chiarlo "Reyna" Barbaresco

93 Points!Wine Enthusiast - "A lovely medley of iris, violet, mature berry and cake spice aromas emerge on this polished, structured wine. The elegant palate doles out juicy Morello cherry, black raspberry, white pepper, chopped herb and a licorice note while firm, fine-grained tannins provide the framework. It's still tightly wound and needs time to fully develop. Drink 2018–2027."
91 Points!James Suckling - "Aromas of dark fruits, walnuts and hints of brunt orange peel. Full body with a solid core of ripe fruit but firm and racy.

(Usual retail: $45)

The wine producing firm of Michele Chiarlo was founded in 1956 by the sole and present owners, Michele and Giuseppina Chiarlo.
