Best of Class - 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition;
Best Red Blend - 2015 Livermore Valley Uncorked Wine Competition
The Livermore Valley has the ideal landscape for growing a producing world class Rhone Style wines. Gravelly soils with clay in the right places coupled with a strong maritime influence allow us to grow wines with intense fruit while maintaining vibrant acidity. We source Grenache from two sites, Marina Ranch and Ghielmetti Vineyard. The Grenache at Marina Ranch is planted from cuttings of original Chateau Beaucastel vines in Chateneuf Du Pape. The wines are rich and mouth filling, showing off the intensity we know from CDP. The Ghielmetti Vineyard block is planted to clone 435 and shows a much more femine, bright fruit rendition of Grenache. Syrah from Hayes Ranch, which sits high above the Valley floor, drives dark fruit, earthy tones, and an inherent smokiness each vintage. The Mourvedre from Raboli Vineyard brings blue fruit notes, spices and that old world Rhone FUNK. Together these vineyards allow to craft a blend that represents the Livermore Valley and the vintage the wine was grown.
Each lot is brought into the winery separately when the fruit has reached the flavor and acidity levels we are looking for. A number of fermentation regimens are performed including open top bins with hand punch downs, tank ferments, barrel ferments. Some lots were inoculated with various yeasts while others fermented with native yeast. The wines were aged in a variety of oak barrels, including 225 L Barriques and 500 L Puncheons. At the end, we are left with numerous blending components to craft a singular wine.
