The 2009 Hames Valley Port boasts avors and aromas of blackberries,
raisins, black pepper and licorice. A subtle tannin structure, combined with
the natural sweetness of the grapes makes this a readily approachable dessert
wine. Try it with strong cheeses, dried fruits and nuts.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Most of Monterey County possesses a cool climate thanks to the constant breezes of of the nearby Pacific Ocean. Consequently, the region is famous for its wonderfully expressive and structured Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. But if you venture a bit further down the Salinas Valley to the southernmost tip of Monterey County, you’ll come to an area that is sheltered from the chilling eects of the maritime winds. This little known, rolling landscape dotted with native grasses and live oaks is called Hames Valley. Granted its own AVA in 1994, Hames Valley has more than 2,000 acres currently planted to vines. The shale-loam soil and warm temperatures make this a great area for Bordeaux and Rhone grapes. It is also the top AVA in California for Portuguese varieties including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cão, Souzão, and Tinta Roriz.
Production Notes
The 2009 vintage experienced less than average rainfall coupled with nearly thirty days of frost. The cool weather trend continued through summer, producing moderate fruit yields and allowing for extended hang-time. The end result is a wine with highly concentrated flavors and a rich, opulent color.
