Discovering Lodi - Wine & Roses
So what does the editor do after a whirlwind day of wine touring? Unwind, of course! My room at Wine & Roses was perfectly cool and inviting, but the pool sounded more invigorating, so I headed there. On my way, I practically ran into a bride who was just about to “walk down the aisle”. She was literally taking her last breath as we caught each other’s eyes. She certainly chose a beautiful place to get married.
The pool was such a welcome sight and I did several laps before two adorable couples, Gary and Cathy and Leo and Kerrie, from Chicago arrived and we all started talking. They had just landed in Sacramento at noon and had come to Lodi because the husbands were interested in buying grapes for the wine they (mostly Leo) make at home. I lived in Chicago until 11 years ago, so we had lots to talk about. Soon, Cara, the only other person by the pool joined us. Turns out, Cara works for Hogue Cellars in Prosser, Washington! Within the hour, we were all friends and decided to have a late dinner together in Wine & Roses Restaurant.
What an exceptional treat that was! I enjoyed a divine Heritage Oaks Chardonnay at the bar with Cara and her colleague and friend Lucy who are here for business and then we all sat down to a marvelous meal. I can’t tell you how gracious and attentive the entire staff was! Our waitress, Sherrie, patiently dealt with all of our individual needs and tastes—and it felt like we had many. The restaurant’s lovely assistant manager appeared several times to be sure we were happy. Even the talented pianist in the bar area was engaging. Her beautiful tunes were piped into the room where we were sitting at a volume that was conducive to our lively conversation.
At one point, late in the meal, I remarked to the table that I was happy to not be dining alone. I didn’t mean for this to sound sad. With my work, I’m accustomed to doing this. But the joy of sharing a splendid culinary experience like the one I found at Wine & Roses with new friends “in wine” just made it all the more delicious.
